Boating Safety and Public Education Programs

USCGAUX VESSEL SAFETY EXAMINATION (VSE) PROGRAM

Flotilla 01-07 conducts courtesy marine safety examinations as a service to the public. By obtaining periodic VSC exams on your vessel you'll enjoy boating more fully with the confidence that you comply with applicable state and federal safety regulations.

PUBLIC EDUCATION BOATING SAFETY CLASSES

Public Education (PE) courses are held as a service to the boating public with the goal of enhancing boating safety. All boaters are encouraged to attend these courses.
Courses are taught throughout San Diego County. Note, a nominal charge is assessed for PE course materials.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

  • Boating Skills and Seamanship
    Eight lesson course for the novice boater covers a wide variety of topics, however, experienced boaters will also find useful information.

  • Basic Coastal Navigation and Advanced Coastal Navigation (BCN/ACN) courses
    Six or thirteen week course to familiarize the boating public with voyage planning, aids to navigation, visual and electronic navigation, and chart reading/plotting. (Basic: 7 week course and Advanced: 13 week course)

  • GPS for Navigators
    A one lesson course for all boaters using GPS (Global Positioning Service) to navigate. Course covers the basic functioning of the GPS and common error corrections.

  • How to Read a Nautical Chart
    A one lesson introductory navigation course for all boaters. Course covers the basic coastal concepts and information found on Navigational Charts.

  • Sailing Fundamentals Course
    Eight lesson course for the novice sail boater covers a wide variety of topics, however, experienced sail boaters will also find useful information.

  • ABC of Boating
    One lesson course for the new boater covers a wide variety of topics, however, experienced boaters will also find useful information.

     

  • Courses Scheduled in Chula Vista

    All courses will be taught in the Marine Room of the Chula Vista Marina.  The Marina is located at the west end of J Street on 550 Marina Parkway.

    Topics Covered:  What Makes a Boat, Nautical Terms, How a Boat Sails, Rigging and Fine Tuning, Boat Handling, Rules of the Road, Aids to Navigation, Legal Requirements and Safety Equipment, Marlinspike, Anchoring, Weather, Emergencies, and Communication.
